UK approves 2.6 GW offshore wind farm
The UK government has approved Orsted’s plan to develop a 2.6 GW offshore wind farm off the northeast coast of England. The Danish utility’s Hornsea 4 project would be the UK’s second largest offshore wind farm with enough power to supply 1m homes with renewable electricity.
Other Hornsea projects include the 2.85 GW Hornsea 3 project, the UK’s biggest offshore wind farm approved to date, the 1.38 GW Hornsea 2 and the 1.22 GW Hornsea 1. Hornsea 1 has been operational since 2020, while Hornsea 2 went online in summer 2022 and Hornsea 3 is expected to enter operation by 2025.
“Hornsea 4 will strengthen Britain’s energy security significantly, helping us to move away from the volatility of international gas prices and closer towards energy independence, as well as enabling us to take a major leap forward towards net zero,” said Ana Musat, executive director of policy at industry association RenewableUK.
